SUMMER AT OUR HOUSES

This summer may be sweltering, but our Houses are keeping it cool with special collaborations and exhibitions. Upper House Chengdu celebrated its seventh anniversary with a Sichuanese banquet, RIMOWA’s travelling art show makes a stop at The Opposite House, summer break has hit Upper House Hong Kong with Bimbo Concept and wellness is all about joyful living at Upper House Shanghai this month.

A CELEBRATION IN STYLE

How time flies! Upper House Chengdu marked its seventh anniversary and the re-opening of Mi Xun Teahouse in the historic Zhuanghuali building this month with a celebration of Sichuanese culture and its rich culinary history.  “We again celebrated in style,” said General Manager Simon. “With the launch of the Michelin Guide in Chengdu this year and being privileged to be recognised ourselves, we brought together seven acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants across the city who prepared a Sichuanese feast at our seventh anniversary party. It was a wonderful day with great food and great company.”

Alongside the team of our own Michelin-starred Mi Xun Teahouse, the distinguished chefs from Chengdu institutions, including Silver Pot, Fang Xiang Jing, Song Yun Ze, Chengdu Restaurant, Chaimen Hui, Xu’s Cuisine and Ma’s Kitchen, prepared a stunning banquet with each course inspired by a different element of Sichuanese culture such as bamboo, tea, ginko, and the hibiscus flower.

“I felt honoured to have collaborated with Chengdu’s Michelin-renowned chefs to celebrate this special occasion,” said Chef Tony of Mi Xun Teahouse. “Working with seven chefs is not an easy task. During this collaboration, we bonded over the same goal and passion and created an exclusive one-night only Sichuanese themed feast for our special guests.”

RIMOWA’S TRAVELLING EXHIBITION LANDS IN BEIJING

Our House in Beijing is as much a destination for art lovers as for travellers – and this month brings the two together. Premium luggage brand RIMOWA’s globetrotting exhibition of works by international and local artists has arrived at The Atrium in The Opposite House for the sixth stop on its international journey.

RIMOWA’s “As Seen By” series gives an elevated perspective to the suitcase brand’s most iconic materials. A diverse collection of international and local Chinese artists were given materials that included grooved aluminium sheets and spare parts to create highly singular sculptures.

JOYFUL LIVING IN SHANGHAI

Wellness means more than just workouts and massages. Mi Xun Spa at Upper House Shanghai has launched its Joyful Living programme, partnering with leading wellness brands SpaChina, INDIBA® and FightOn, for a holistic, positive approach.

The new concept aligns with Mi Xun Spa’s emphasis on the balance of body and mind. As part of the programme, our partners are sharing wellness knowledge with our guests and community, with lifestyle media SpaChina giving tips for improving mental wellbeing and FightOn, the official partner of the Chinese Nutrition Society, offering insight into healthy eating habits. In our treatment rooms, Spanish-founded pioneer of Proionic® technology INDIBA® is bringing its cutting-edge, immune-boosting therapies.

SUMMER BREAK IS HERE

Soak up summer with the family at Upper House Hong Kong where we’ve collaborated with homegrown children’s lifestyle brand, Bimbo Concept, to create a playroom and workshop space. Bimbo Concept founder Elaine tells us the inspiration behind the brand and what makes Bimbo’s workshops special.

What inspired you to start Bimbo Concept?

I wanted to start a business related to children 4 years ago, when my daughter was 1 year old and her brother was 3 years old. I had a hard time finding good design and quality products in Hong Kong, so I decided to build a multi-brand concept store with my own curation, to offer a range of high quality, sustainable products for parents or gift givers. The Bimbo Concept online store was first launched 3 years ago and extended to retail the year after. Now we have 3 retail stores in Hong Kong as well as the online store. My husband Luca and I are also working on a new project Bimbo Casa, a children centric home deco brand. At the Upper House Summer Children’s Residence, we have presented our Bimbo Casa collection of animal rug, libraries, sofa and armchairs, etc so all visitors can touch and experience our products.

How is Bimbo Concept different from other children’s workshops?

We have a wide range of children’s workshops for different age ranges such as kindermusik, kids yoga and mindfulness, sand art and sensory, and qi gong which are all related to the jungle safari, and nature. My children have been doing most of the classes since they were babies, and I truly believe these experiences are great for their development where they are can learn by playing. We decided to co-host the workshops at Upper House Hong Kong as the space at Upper House Hong Kong is nice and calming, which we feel is great for workshops for family with children.

MOONCAKES WITH A MESSAGE OF SUSTAINABILITY

“This is a great conversation piece,” says Genevieve, co-founder of EDITECTURE. “It’s about spreading awareness of upcycling.” For Mid-Autumn Festival this year, we worked with the forward-thinking design studio to create mooncake box sets for Upper House that are meaningful and sustainable.

For Genevieve and her co-founder Jacqueline, there were perfect synergies immediately. “Upper House calls themselves Houses, not hotels. This conveys a similar message as Mid-Autumn Festival which is all about family and unity,” says Jacqueline. The duo drew on Jacqueline’s memories of Chinese curio boxes that she learned about from her antique-dealer parents for the overall design concept (“it’s kind of like a little surprise, like the Houses”) and incorporated a message of sustainability, a belief that’s core to both Upper House and EDITECTURE.

Using 50 kilograms of uniforms and 65 kilograms of glass bottles from the Houses, the team developed jade Ping An Kou amulets, paying homage to the traditional artefacts that families used to pass peace and safety down generations, in the same circular way that is central to sustainable development. “We're hoping that whoever receives this Mooncake Box Set can also share blessings for Mid-Autumn Festival and the concept of sustainability to family and friends,” says Jacqueline.
