In March 2019, Upper House launched our highly anticipated art programme ‘Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life’ at The Opposite House in Beijing. The inaugural programme theme ‘Seeds of Life’ is inspired by the Five Chinese Elements – wood, fire, earth, metal and water – and features multi-media installations by Swiss video artist Katja Loher.
In collaboration with Gallery Weekend Beijing, Katja created an otherworldly installation of five ‘Videoplanets,’ each representing an element. Floating above The Opposite House’s lobby atrium, each planetary sculpture has kaleidoscopic visions of choreographed dances and elemental patterns.
The launch event also included a live performance of the Five Elements explored by Katja; the dancers’ movements inspired by her encounter with Beijing-based choreographer Zhao Liang. To complete the event’s theme, attendees including Beijing’s art-lovers, House guests and members of the media also enjoyed element-inspired sweet and savoury snacks and curated cocktails.
