THE MIDDLE HOUSE SUPPORTS WORLD OCEANS DAY 2020
By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans.
On June 7, Upper House Shanghai hosted a World Oceans Day panel discussion at Sui Tang Shang to explore what can be done to protect the oceans and marine life.
We invited UB Qiu, North Asia Sustainability Lead of Interface, and Heather Kaye, Co-founder of Loop Swim to come to our House and share their vision for collaborative conservation and how they built fair and inclusive business models that deliver ‘less plastic, more fish’ for our oceans.
UB Qiu discussed how as a global leading flooring manufacturer, Interface’s Net-Works project not only addresses issues of ocean plastics but improves the lives of coastal communities in developing countries. Heather Kaye introduced how sustainable swimwear company Loop Swim transforms post-consumer PET plastic bottles into UPF50+ sun protective swimwear – and recycles swimsuits at the end of its life. The latest Loop Swim collection was also on display, demonstrating a creative and effective way to reuse waste.
This was followed by a discussion moderated by Haiyan Sun, founder and chief editor of Business Ecology Studio, and a hands-on waste yarn DIY workshop with Clara Non-profit DIY- teaching people how to make a bag that lasts.
We were thrilled to be able to support World Oceans Day and raise awareness of the work we all need to do in order to help save our oceans.
